A lot is said at the beginning of the year about New Years resolutions. People make them, or go into great detail about why they don't make them. I for one like New Years resolutions. I like being able to look back over the last year of my life and have an objective measure of what I have gotten done, how far I have come. Sometimes I have completely failed when it comes to the resolutions I have set for myself. I haven't read more, haven't made my bed more often, haven't complained less. And that is OK, I'll try again this year. And sometimes I have surpassed my expectations. I have read MORE, (ok honestly I always knew I wasn't going to make my bed more)...but you get my point. If we don't set expectations or resolutions for ourselves, how are we to know how we've done? And I for one am not content not growing, not improving, being content with the status quo.
Here is why I am writing this post now though . I don't make my New Year's resolutions at the beginning of the year, not the beginning of the calendar year that is. I tend to make my resolutions at the beginning of the school year. The summer is drawing to a close *sighs* for most of us this means a return to more structure. For me my kids are back in school, my schedule becomes less erratic as people are returning from vacations and settling into routines of their own. It is a great time to take stock, make some resolutions and while the kids are returning to the discipline of school, and homework, I buckle down on my own discipline. This year I resolve to be better about the snacks I send my kids to school with. Being a fairly crunchy granola healthy mama it's not like I am sending them with twinkies and red bull, but I admit to going the lazy route and throwing in a quaker granola bar ...day ....after day....This year I am going to send more fruit, make more home made snacks, I am going to send my kids with foods that will actually nourish them, not just with snacks that don't scare me. I resolve to streamline our morning routine so I don't become a raving lunatic every day five minutes after we are supposed to leave the house and my kids are still looking for their shoes. ....we'll see how well that one goes.
For me I also have new fitness goals. I am going to run more races. I am going to have a more structured workout routine. Rather than just working "legs" I am going to have a goal of how much I want to squat by the end of the year, and I am going to structure my workouts towards that goal. Come the actual New Year I can take a look at my resolutions and maybe tweak some, but I figure by that point I am already ahead of the game right?
