If you have been perusing my site, you will see that I have added small group personal training as one of the services that we offer. To be fair it's sort of been there as a possibility for a while, but I haven't really pushed it much, and it hasn't been used much. So why the change now?
When I started out as a personal trainer a few years ago I was passionate about personal training. Physical fitness and health had been a big part of my life for a long time, it has personally changed my life and I have seen it change so many others. I was excited to start sharing this passion with others and seeing their lives change. Reality is sometimes not what we had imagined however. This can be a tough industry to get a start in. So at the beginning in order to pay my rent at the personal training studio that I was working out of I taught classes. I am so grateful to the studio owner who gave me that option and allowed me to get the start in this business-but the truth is I HATE teaching classes. I didn't enjoy it at all. Some of that I am sure was experience. It's rarely easy to do something well and feel comfortable at it right away- and boy was that the case with me and teaching. I got more comfortable (and hopefully better at it) as time went by but I never got to a place where I enjoyed it and as soon as I could afford to quit and just do training I did. For me, at the heart of it, the problem was that I didn't like the instructor position nearly as much as I enjoy being a coach. I always felt in a class setting like someone (or several) weren't getting what they deserved. You were going to have some that were in extremely good shape and not challenged by the class, and you were going to have others who were going to feel intimidated, or not be able to leave feeling like they had completed the class. Both those extremes bothered me.
So now years later I have done almost exclusively one-on-one personal training. I love it. I love writing personalized workouts, I love being able to incorporate nutrition and wellness into what we do, and most of all I love seeing results. But the truth is that one on one personal training can be very cost prohibitive to a lot of people. Which leaves them trying it on their own in a gym and getting frustrated from the lack of results.
This is why I have now started incorporating small group personal training and why I am growing to love it. In a small group personal training session I keep the sizes to 3-6 people. It still very much allows me to write personalized work-out, and it allows me to invest in my clients lives in other ways that I would not be able to do in a typical large class setting. Some people do even better in a group setting because they are driven by the energy of others- and they are pushed by good old fashioned competition to go further and do more than they would do in a private setting. But best of all it makes it a lot more cost effective for a lot of people who are looking to get more out of their workouts. Sometimes the small groups are all friends. They approach me together to train together, sometimes people contact me individually and I place them in a group that is already formed. Either way everyone gets a really good workout, in an environment where they feel comfortable and encouraged, but at a price that they can afford.
